Pune-based Gennova Biopharmaceuticals witnessed demand for its Omicron-specific Covid-19 vaccine, Gemcovac-OM, due to the recent surge in cases. Gemcovac-OM is India's first mRNA-based vaccine approved against the JN.1 variant. Priced at Rs 2299, it is available in 70 centers across metros and certain cities. The JN.1 variant is a descendant of BA.2.86 and Gemcovac-OM generates Omicron-specific antibodies and memory immune responses which might make it effective against the variant. The vaccine is delivered intradermally using the needle-free device called Tropis.
