Judges be allowed to decide on taking up post-retirement assignments: Justice Kaul

Former Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul believes that retired judges should have the freedom to decide whether to accept post-retirement government assignments. He distinguishes between different types of posts, such as tribunals, and states that there is nothing wrong with judges accepting such assignments. In September 2023, a bench led by Justice Kaul dismissed a plea seeking a cooling-off period for retired judges. While there is no specific rule against judges accepting post-retirement jobs, the 14th Law Commission recommended against it.
