Truckers protest 10-year jail for hit-and-run cases
Monday, 1 January 2024 Truck and bus drivers are protesting against the provision of up to 10 years jail for hit-and-run cases. The protests are happening across some states. Truckers and transporters organizations are appealing to the Centre to address the issue before it escalates. The largest truckers' body, AIMTC, has written to the prime minister and the home minister expressing their concerns. The provision in the new law has become a cause of concern for truck drivers. Trucks have been stranded in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan.

In a devastating road accident today, at least 18 people lost their lives and many others were injured after the bus they were travelling in collided with another vehicle in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. Among the deceased were three women and one child, police reported. The double-decker bus, which was en route from Bihar’s Sitamarhi to Delhi, crashed into a milk tanker from behind on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway early this morning.
