Governor can remove minister only on cabinet advice: SC on Senthil Balaji
Friday, 5 January 2024 The Supreme Court rejects a plea challenging the continuance of V Senthil Balaji as a minister in Tamil Nadu. The court states that the governor can remove him only on the recommendation of the cabinet. Balaji was arrested in a cash-for-jobs scam and has been divested of his portfolios but continues to be a minister. The Madras High Court had refused to consider a petition against Balaji's continuance, and the Supreme Court concurs with this view.

Polling in 102 parliamentary seats across 21 states and Union Territories in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections commenced at 7 am on April 19 and ended at 6 pm. Over 102 parliamentary constituencies in 21 states and union territories headed to the polling booth on Friday, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. West Bengal recorded the highest turnout till 5 PM at 77.57 per cent, followed by Tripura at 76.10 per cent. Voter turnout in Assam stood at 70.77 per cent, while Manipur recorded a voter turnout of 68.58 per cent till 5 PM.
