India calls US remark on CAA ‘misplaced, misinformed, unwarranted’, says votebank politics shouldn't determine views
Friday, 15 March 2024 Dismissing the US State Department’s comments on implementation of the Act as “misplaced, misinformed and unwarranted”, the govt said lectures by those who have a limited understanding of India’s pluralistic traditions and the region’s post-Partition history are best not attempted. “There are no grounds for any concern on treatment of minorities…partners and well-wishers of India should welcome the intent with which this step has been taken,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
The United States recognizes India as a strategic partner, engaging in open and honest discussions, including concerns about India's relationship with Russia. This statement from State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow for bilateral talks.

The US State Department has released its 2023 religious freedom report, covering over 200 countries. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concern over the increase in hate speech, anti-conversion laws, and the demolition of homes and places of worship for minority groups in India. The report also mentions efforts to protect religious freedom globally. During the Lok Sabha poll campaigns, accusations of hate speech surfaced against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which were denied by the BJP. The report cites increased attacks on minority groups and challenges in protecting their rights. India has rejected the report, calling it biased and based on misinformation, yet emphasizes the importance of its partnership with the US and continued dialogue on these issues. While offering condolences, Washington stated that it was unable to accommodate the Iranian request due to logistical challenges. This rare appeal from Iran, which typically regards America and Israel as adversaries, was revealed by the US State Department during a news briefing. Responding to queries about potential blame from Tehran, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin firmly denied any US involvement in the crash.

India on Thursday reaffirmed its long-standing position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict following the recent recognition of Palestine by Ireland, Norway, and Spain. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted India's historical support for Palestinian statehood and a two-state solution. When asked about the coordinated decision by Spain, Ireland, and Norway to formally recognise Palestine, Jaiswal, at a weekly press briefing, said, “As you are aware, India was one of the first countries to recognise the state of Palestine in the late 1980s, and we have long supported a two-state solution which entails the establishment of a sovereign, viable, and independent state of Palestine within recognised and mutually agreed borders, living side by side with Israel in peace.”
