'In '18, Amarinder refused to let Trudeau plane land unless he agreed to a meet'
Tuesday, 7 May 2024 Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and his defence minister Harjit Singh Sajjan were not allowed to land in Amritsar in Feb 2018 until they had agreed to meet the then Punjab CM, Capt Amarinder Singh, according to a report in Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper, on Tuesday. The newspaper's report comes within days of the arrest of three Punjabi youths in connection with the murder of pro-Khalistan separatist and chief of the banned Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) Hardeep Singh Nijjar (45), designated a terrorist by India.
Trump has announced a 25% tariff increase on Canadian steel and aluminum, escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa. The decision comes just days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned of potential economic fallout from U.S. trade policies. Trump justified the move by citing the need to protect American industries and jobs, while Canada has strongly condemned the tariffs as "unfair and harmful" to North American trade relations. Experts warn this could lead to retaliatory measures from Canada, further straining economic ties between the two nations.

A second flight carrying 119 Indian immigrants deported from the U.S. is set to land at Amritsar Airport on February 15, with most of the deportees hailing from Punjab. This follows a previous deportation flight on February 5, which sparked controversy over the alleged mistreatment of passengers. The Indian government has pledged to address concerns with U.S. authorities. Many deportees reportedly entered the U.S. illegally via the "dunkey" route, leading to increased crackdowns on human trafficking networks in India. Another deportation flight is expected on February 16.

A shocking video released by the US Border Patrol (USBP) has sparked outrage across India. The footage shows 104 Indian deportees being shackled in handcuffs and leg restraints as they are forcibly marched onto a military transport plane, underscoring the Trump administration's harsh stance on illegal immigration. The video, posted by USBP Chief Michael W. Banks, carries a stern warning: "If you cross illegally, you will be removed." The dehumanizing process, which includes the use of military aircraft for deportations, has drawn severe criticism from Indian opposition MPs, human rights activists, and citizens alike. As the plane landed in Amritsar, deportees like Jaspal Singh and Harwinder Singh recounted harrowing tales of their perilous journey through illegal routes, further intensifying the outcry. This video serves as a chilling reminder of the brutal tactics employed in the name of immigration control.
