Mahayuti to hedge state poll bets with please-all budget
Sunday, 23 June 2024 The last session before the assembly polls, likely to be held in Oct, is expected to be stormy as govt will look to reach out to voters and MVA, still riding the high from its stellar performance in the LS polls, will look to corner it over several key issues, especially the exam leaks, the Maratha and OBC reservation rows and the agrarian crisis, as well as expose 'scams'. The state govt had in Feb presented an interim budget.
Eknath Shinde has stepped down as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra following the Mahayuti alliance’s resounding victory in the assembly elections. Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor C P Radhakrishnan, who requested him to serve as a caretaker CM until a successor is appointed.
The spotlight now shifts to the selection of the next chief minister, with BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and Shinde both emerging as contenders. The BJP, which secured 132 seats to become the single-largest party, has bolstered its claim to the top post. However, the Shiv Sena, led by Shinde, is demanding continuity in leadership, citing coalition precedents and support from the party’s MLAs and the Maratha community.
