'Majority will become minority... ': Allahabad HC on religious conversion gatherings

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 2 July 2024
The Allahabad high court warned that unchecked unlawful conversion of religion could lead to today's majority becoming tomorrow's minority in India. Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal made this assertion while denying bail to Kailash, accused under UP's anti-conversion law. Kailash allegedly transported individuals from Hamirpur to Delhi for conversions, prompting the court's concern over citizens not returning home. The court urged an immediate halt to such religious gatherings where conversions occur, highlighting the risk of demographic shifts. It noted conversions targeting SC/ST and economically disadvantaged groups, stressing that while Article 25 guarantees religious freedom, it doesn't endorse forced conversions.
