'Not the drains': How design flaws in IAS coaching center led to flooding that killed 3 UPSC aspirants

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 31 July 2024
Three students tragically died in a flooded basement at Rau's IAS Study Circle in Old Rajender Nagar, Delhi. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) attributed the flooding to several infrastructural issues, including encroached stormwater drains, a lack of barriers, and the road's saucer-like depression. The security staff failed to notice excessive rainwater entering the basement. MCD officials emphasized that other nearby properties had sufficient barriers to prevent such flooding. An ongoing investigation revealed that many properties in the area had converted to commercial use, consequently obstructing stormwater drains and raising safety concerns.
