IndiaTimes Thursday, 15 August 2024 ()
A retired 71-year-old school teacher in Vitthalnagar was scammed out of Rs 20 lakh by a cybercriminal posing as a deputy commissioner of police. From May 31 to June 3, the scammer convinced her of a fake money laundering case and imminent arrest. The victim transferred funds across 10 transactions to evade arrest. A month later, she reported the incident to the cybercrime unit, leading to a cheating case being registered under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Similar recent scams have also been reported in Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
