Kolkata's Metro proved essential amid street clashes on Tuesday, with the East-West Metro, particularly the Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section, becoming the sole commute link between twin cities. Over 47,000 passengers used the route by 5pm, expected to rise past 70,000 by day's end. The North-South Metro carried three lakh passengers during the same period. The 'Chhatra Samaj' agitation disrupted road transport, making the Metro indispensable. People expressed relief that the Metro was operational, allowing them to navigate the city despite the turmoil on the roads.
