Crippling IAF gaps force government to set up panel for new road map
Sunday, 22 December 2024 India's Air Force is facing a significant shortage of fighter jets and support aircraft. A high-level committee has been formed to address these gaps, focusing on both domestic development and foreign acquisition of 114 new fighters. Delays in engine deliveries are impacting the induction of Tejas fighters, while the need for mid-air refuelers and airborne early-warning aircraft remains critical.
India has approved its biggest-ever defense deal, worth $7.3 billion, to procure 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) for the Indian Army and Air Force. These helicopters, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), are equipped to operate in extreme conditions, making them ideal for deployment in sensitive areas like the Siachen glacier and Eastern Ladakh. With advanced features such as the ability to take off and land at altitudes of 5,000 meters, these helicopters will significantly enhance India's military capabilities in the face of regional threats, particularly from China and Pakistan.
