Relief to undertrial prisoners: Centre writes to states to enact Section 479 of BNSS

The Central government has instructed states and Union Territories to implement Section 479 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, providing relief to undertrial prisoners, particularly those serving one-third or one-half of their maximum sentences. Authorities are to furnish the status of implementation and compliance, aiding in reducing long detentions and overcrowding in prisons.
