Strong earthquake in Taiwan injures 27 and causes scattered damage
Tuesday, 21 January 2025 () A 6.4-magnitude earthquake has struck southern Taiwan, leaving 27 people with minor injuries and some reported damage. Taiwan authorities said the quake struck early Tuesday southeast of Chiayi and was a shallow 6 miles below the surface. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at a less powerful magnitude 6. There were scattered reports of minor to moderate damage around the cities of Chiayi and Tainan. Taiwanβs fire department said 27 people were sent to hospitals. Six people were rescued from a collapsed house, and a provincial bridge was reported to be damaged. The quake caused a fire at a printing factory that was later extinguished.
