Erdogan submits Sweden's NATO bid to Turkish parliament
Monday, 23 October 2023 Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has officially submitted Sweden's NATO membership application to parliament, bringing closer the end of a 17-month diplomatic standoff. Sweden dropped its policy of non-alignment last year after Russia's war on Ukraine, prompting its request for NATO membership. Hungary and Turkey are the only NATO members yet to ratify Sweden's membership. Erdogan agreed to put the ratification before the Turkish parliament at a NATO summit in July.
