Back in Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif gets bail in corruption cases
Tuesday, 24 October 2023
Pakistan's former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, has been granted bail in corruption cases until October 26. Sharif, who was convicted on corruption charges in 2017, returned to Pakistan last week after four years in self-exile in London. The Islamabad High Court extended his protective bail after prosecutors from the anti-graft agency raised no objections. Sharif's convictions remain in force, but the court has barred authorities from arresting him until Tuesday, when he is due to appear in court. His legal team plans to pursue appeals against the convictions, with the aim of overturning them.
