US drops Confederate name from last of nine military bases
Friday, 27 October 2023
The United States has renamed a military base in Georgia to honor former president and World War II commander Dwight D. Eisenhower. The base, previously known as Fort Gordon, is the last of nine installations to drop the name of a figure associated with the Confederate States of America. Eisenhower, who served as supreme commander during the D-Day invasion and later became the 34th president, is celebrated for his leadership and achievements. The renaming comes as part of a broader movement to remove Confederate symbols and names from military bases.
