After US vetoes UN truce push, Israel hits north & south Gaza
Saturday, 9 December 2023 Israel continues airstrikes and artillery attacks on the north and south of the Gaza Strip. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter to warn of a 'humanitarian catastrophe' in Gaza. The US vetoed a UN resolution for an immediate ceasefire, stating that it would allow Hamas to continue ruling Gaza. An Israeli man taken hostage by Hamas militants has died during a rescue mission. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 17,400, with over 46,000 wounded. In the West Bank, two Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces.
Israel pounded the Gaza Strip from north to south on Saturday in an expanded phase of its two-month-old war against Hamas, after the United States wielded its U.N.
