A homeless man, Garret Allen Doty, accused of assaulting a former San Francisco city official with a metal pipe, was found not guilty of assault charges. The case had gained national attention as a symbol of the city's crime and homelessness issues. The victim, Don Carmignani, 54, suffered a fractured skull and severe facial injuries requiring over 100 stitches.
