UK home secy under fire for joking about date rape drug
Monday, 25 December 2023 British home secretary James Cleverly faced backlash for joking about date rape while announcing plans to crack down on the offence. Cleverly reportedly made the joke during a drinks reception at 10 Downing Street, suggesting drugging his wife. The Fawcett Society, a women's rights charity, called the remarks "sickening" and demanded Cleverly's resignation. Cleverly said "a little bit of Rohypnol" - the so-called date rape drug - "in her drink every night" was "not really illegal if it''s only a little bit".
