Tuesday, 2 January 2024
Taiwan's ruling party is predicted to win a third consecutive term in the upcoming elections, despite President Xi Jinping's efforts to bring the country closer to Beijing. Vice President Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party leads in the polls, followed by Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang and Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People's Party. The election has focused on the candidates' stance towards China, with Lai advocating for Taiwanese independence and closer ties with the US. Beijing has cut contact with Taiwan's current administration.
