Monday, 8 January 2024
Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has won a fifth term in power with her party taking three-quarters of seats in parliament. The Awami League has won the election with 223 seats. The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) called a general strike and refused to participate, calling the election a sham. The BNP head Tarique Rahman called the result a disgrace to the democratic aspirations of Bangladesh. Hasina has been the Prime Minister since returning to power in 2009.
