Bone-chilling cold in US tests power grids from Texas to Alberta

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (Ercot) set a wintertime demand record during a cold snap in December 2022 and expects to challenge that record this week during the freeze. Texas is under special scrutiny as the recent cold snap is one of the rare instances of freezing temperatures since February 2021. During that time, an intense cold wave resulted in over 200 deaths and left millions without power for several days due to breakdowns in the state's power and natural gas systems.
