IndiaTimes Thursday, 27 June 2024
Patrick Dispoto, 59, was struck by lightning and killed while warning beachgoers of an approaching storm at Seaside Park Beach, New Jersey. Despite his girlfriend Ruth Fussell's pleas to stay safe, Dispoto returned to the beach to alert children. Emergency responders' efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Following the incident, Seaside Park installed a $50,000 Strike Guard Lightning Detection System. Fussell remembered Dispoto as a selfless person who always helped others, calling his final act "ultimate heroism."
