How Keir Starmer defied expectations to lift Labour back to power
Friday, 5 July 2024 Starmer has now led Labour to victory, potentially securing the largest majority in Parliament since Tony Blair’s New Labour landslide in 1997. The presumptive prime minister has significantly exceeded expectations since succeeding the hard-left leader Jeremy Corbyn in 2020. Despite being seen as bland and boring, and not a "Tony Blair," Starmer has partially benefited from favorable circumstances, helping him revive Labour's prospects.
Sir Keir Starmer insisted "every vote counts" as Labour continue to soar ahead of the Conservatives in opinion polls. Speaking at a campaign event in Wales, the Labour leader said: "We are fighting for every vote and across the country in many constituencies, it will go down to the wire."
