Turkish leader rules out peace deal as Turks and Greeks mark outbreak of war that left Cyprus divided
Saturday, 20 July 2024 () The leaders of Turkey and Greece took opposing stances to mark the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus - which led to the division of the island.
Both Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoΔan and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will attend events on the island, which is divided between celebrations in the north and memorials in the south.

Turkish forces landed on Cyprus on 20 July and captured 3% of the island before the UN Security Council secured a ceasefire. The Turkish area was later widened to 36%.
