In Venezuela, citizens voted in a crucial presidential election that could either bring political change or prolong the policies blamed for the country's economic crisis. Incumbent President Nicolas Maduro faced opposition from retired diplomat Edmundo Gonzalez. The election coincided with the late President Hugo Chavez's 70th birthday, with polls open from 6am to 6pm local time.
