Sunday, 8 September 2024 () Spain's foreign minister confirmed that asylum will be provided to Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. After challenging President Maduro's re-election and facing an arrest warrant, Gonzalez sought refuge in the Spanish embassy in Caracas. He left Venezuela on a Spanish military aircraft, with safe passage granted by the Maduro government for political peace.
