Japan’s elderly population hits record high

Japan's elderly population has surged to a record high of 36.25 million, representing 29.3 percent of the total populace. This demographic trend is escalating medical and welfare expenses amid a declining labour force. In response, a record number of elderly individuals—9.14 million—were employed in 2023, constituting 13.5 per cent of the workforce.
