Watch: Elon Musk explains how SpaceX's Mechazilla can catch Super Heavy booster
Sunday, 13 October 2024 () SpaceX successfully flew a 233-foot rocket booster back to its launch site and caught it mid-air using Mechazilla's mechanical arms. The Super Heavy Booster, weighing about 250 tons, was captured after a test flight. "When the engines land... it's gonna drop the velocity to basically zero and come in between the arms. The arms will be wide, and as it's coming in, the arms will, will close, go flush against the side of the vehicle, and the vehicle will be descending through the arms. The probability is uncertain, but it is above zero," Elon explained.
SpaceX’s Starship, the largest flying object ever built, just completed its fifth flight test on Sunday. But the more incredible thing was that catch: the Super Heavy booster rocket weighs 250 tons and is the height of a skyscraper, and ‘Mechazilla’ just caught it mid-air.
