Following the rebel takeover of Damascus and President Assad's flight to Russia, the UK, Germany, and Austria have paused Syrian asylum applications. Millions of Syrians, displaced by 13 years of civil war, had sought refuge in neighboring countries and Europe, including over 20,000 resettled in the UK by February 2021.
