Sunday, 15 December 2024 Close to a thousand people may have been killed as Cyclone Chido hit the French island of Mayotte on Saturday, according to the island's top official.
Officials have called the storm the most destructive to hit the archipelago in 90 years, with fears of a high death toll as the cyclone wreaks havoc across the region.
Cleanup efforts in Mayotte are ongoing after Cyclone Chido hit the region two weeks ago. Household waste was collected for the first time since the storm, though the responsible public body has yet to resume its operations.
