The United Nations has officially reported over 12,300 civilian deaths and more than 27,800 injuries in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February 2022. The latest data reveals a sharp increase in casualties, with long-range Russian weapons and aerial bombings causing the majority of the deaths in 2024. This marks a significant escalation in the conflict as Russia intensifies its attacks. The UN also reported over 2,100 civilians killed or injured in just the past two months, alongside the displacement of tens of thousands from front-line areas.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed regret over his country’s decision to relinquish its nuclear weapons in an interview, stating that Ukraine's lack of nuclear deterrence has left it vulnerable. Zelensky criticized the U.S., the U.K., and other security guarantors for failing to uphold their promises under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which assured Ukraine’s security in exchange for giving up its nuclear arsenal. He used strong language to express his frustration, stating that the guarantors "didn’t give a f**k" about Ukraine's sovereignty or security. Zelensky further reflected on the collapse of the Soviet Union, when Ukraine inherited a significant nuclear stockpile, only to give it up in exchange for security assurances that, according to him, were never honored. He emphasized that if Ukraine had retained its nuclear capabilities, it would have been in a stronger position to deter Russia's aggression.

In a decisive and powerful strike, Russian forces have targeted and destroyed a German-made Leopard tank, along with several other key military assets, in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. Using kamikaze drones, the Russian military identified the Leopard tank through reconnaissance UAVs before launching a series of devastating drone attacks. The tank was seen engulfed in flames as it was struck multiple times. In addition to the Leopard tank, two more tanks, an M113 APC, and two pickup trucks were eliminated. Russian forces also neutralized five Soviet-made D30 howitzers and four U.S.-made M101 and M119 howitzers. This destruction occurred during a failed Ukrainian counter-attack, leading to significant losses for Kyiv in an ongoing battle for control in the region.
