Why was this British man lynched by mob in remote Ecuadorian Amazon village

A British national, Michael Hann, was lynched in Ecuador. He was arrested for allegedly killing his friend, Rodrigo Chavez, over a business dispute. Villagers stormed the police station where Hann was held. They dragged him out and set him on fire. Police were unable to prevent the mob violence. The UK Foreign Office is working to confirm the victim's identity.
