FISHERMAN CUTTING ROPE USING KNIFE / WHALE SHARK SWIMMING FREE AND SWISHING ITS TAIL BEFORE SWIMMING AWAY STORY: Five fishermen were on the way home off Malaysia's coast when they noticed a whale shark tangled in a rope next to the vessel on Sunday morning (December 1).
The video, filmed by a crew member Zaidi Bin Suhaili, showed anglers cutting the rope around the whale shark and freeing it.
"When I gently pulled the shark over, it didn't resist, and while we were cutting the rope the shark stayed still and close to the boat," David Lai, a fisherman who posted the video on social media, told Reuters.
Once the rope was cut, the whale shark swished its tail several times before swimming away.
Despite their name, whale sharks are gentle giants, and as a species are believed to be some 60 million years old.
In many parts of the world the fish is a protected species.
