Truck driver misjudges height of load and hits footbridge in Malaysia

This is the shocking moment a truck driver misjudged the heigh of his load and smashed into a bridge.

The 16-wheeler was captured on CCTV approaching the 16ft high bridge in Penang, Malaysia last Wednesday (February 5) afternoon.

Footage shows how the lorry almost made it under the 45-year-old structure - one of the most-recognised walkways in the former British colony - but the tip of the crane smashed into the bridge.

Fire crews rushed to the scene to secure the structure and prevent it collapsing.

The Penang mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said the accident was devastating for the town but they would focus on trying to repair the bridge, a walkway to the island's ferry terminal.

He said: "It was a sad moment for me and the people because the bridge has been part of the landscape for many years.

It is a historical monument, and a facility for pedestrians.

"But the most important thing now is replacing the crossing for the people and we will draw the pedestrian line for that while we will dismantle the bridge so the traffic can operate again soon." The accident is now under an investigation by the police to determine any charges that the driver could face.

The representative from the Penang state council Jagdeep Singh Deo said the the council are considering sue the trailer truck company that responsible for the event.

He said: "We are considering suing the trailer company for the damage they had done which is more than just on the bridge but on the people's feelings but for the time being we will wait for the investigation result."
