Chico City council to discuss homeless camps

The Chico city council will discuss opening cooling centers safely during the pandemic and moving homeless camps out of public parks during Tuesday's meeting.

The city is looking at other places for them to go - one option they are considering, the silver dollar fairgrounds.

Camping is banned throughout the city of chico.

The city had been allowing homeless to camp in the parks during the pandemic to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

But at the last council meeting they city decided to move the homeless from the parks to another location as soon as they pick a place.

"i want the homeless folks to have a place to be, if you are going to kick them out of the parks where are they going to go they dont have the means to leave town./// our public spaces need to be regulated and one regulation should be that they are not campgrounds./// its my hope we will find some opportunity to utilize space to get folks out of the areas of parks that cant facilitate that type of use."

Orme says the city could possibly write a letter to governor newsom asking to use the silver dollar fairgrounds as a shelter space.

He also says homeless are no* being moved out unless they are camping near the waterways.

The meeting is set to start here in less than an hour.
