Portion of downtown Terre Haute Street permanently closes as Convention Center construction continue

A stretch of a downtown Terre Haute Street is now closed for good.

The portion of 8th Street between Cherry Street and Wabash Avenue is permanently closed for the continued construction of the new Convention Center in downtown Terre Haute.

Good evening and thanks for joining us.

A stretch of a downtown terre haute street is now closed for good.

We're talking about part of 8th street.

It's the section of wabash avenue and cherry street.

A new convention center will soon go up in downtown terre haute.

News 10's dominic miranda is live in the area right now.

He joins us now with an update on construction and what you need to know.

Rondrell..

As you can see behind me....8th street between cherry street and wabash avenue is now permanently closed.

This is so "garmong construction" can enter into the 2nd phase of construction on the convention center downtown.

I spoke with president of the vigo county commissioners brad anderson this afternoon.

He says this is a great sign and the beginning of a rewarding process.

This construction will deal mainly with parking and the movement of different utilities.

Anderson told me this may take a while when you're moving utilities which have been there for a lot of years.

This closure simply means that the construction of this convention center is staying on schedule..... and anderson says this is cause of a lot of excitement for great things coming to downtown terre haute.

"with the future expansions of things downtown, i think it will be good.

As we've seen, the downtown has not been as busy as they have been through the years.

I think with some of the things coming, more restaurants, maybe even shopping and everything, i think you're going to see a revitalization of downtown."

///////// construction will continue throughout the rest of 20-20 and all of 20-21.

The convention center is projected to open in april of 20-22.

Anderson says while this may be a minor inconvenience right now.... it will be worth it for downtown terre haute in the future.

Reporting live in terre haute.

I'm news 10's dominic miranda back to you we want to remind you....you can watch progress on the convention center... there's a camera overlooking the construction site.

The camera is on top of the terre haute children's museum.

From the camera..

You can see both a live view, and a time-lapse.

It's all on the capital improvement board's
