And lunch every school day.

The federal government extended its summer free lunch program this month.

News 18's micah upshaw tells us how it'll work.

:23 l: for some people it also could be, 'do i pay my electric bill or do i send lunch with my kiddo.'

M: it's a question lori shofroth cords is grateful parents won't have to ask these next few months.

Tippecanoe school corporation joins lafayette, west lafayette and the lafayette catholic school district in participating in the usda's summer food service program.

L: the usda rolled this out about two weeks ago but we had to wait for the guidance from the indiana department of education because of paper work and you know, how to go about, you know, which way to go.

M: this program provides free school breakfasts and lunches for all students no matter their household income.

Shofroth cords who works as tsc's director of nutrition services says the program is now underway -- and any student who paid for a school meal during the first two weeks of september will be reimbursed on their student lunch accounts.

She says it's still important families make sure they sign up for free and reduced lunch program if they need it.

L: once all the waiver money has run out, which it could be two weeks from now, let's hope not or it could be the last day of december so once we go back in january we'll go back to the national school lunch program.

M: the national school lunch program is what tsc was operating under when school started in august.

This program only offered free meals to students who were eligible for free and reduced lunch.

You can find information on how to sign up for these benefits on our website wlfi.com.
