Douglas County nursing homes struggle with COVID-19 outbreaks

Nursing homes in douglas county are dealing with some big outbreaks at their facilities... as coronavirus numbers*continue to surge.
But as kezi 9 news reporter evita garza explans -- national experts say this could have been avoided.
In the last few weeks, it been a battle for curry manor residental care facility.
According to oha weekly covid-19 report, they reported 34 cases this week among their staff and patients.
Plus, one death.
The first case was reported on november 4& that means their numbers skyrocketed in just three weeks.

Umpqua valley nursing and rehabilitation has seen 19 cases so far?
But it's not just douglas county.
In lane county& evergreen memory care facility in eugene was also hit hard.
They had 40 cases and 13 deaths back in september.

Sandi greenberg is a nursing home expert out of dallas, texas.
She says it frustrating outbreaks are still an issue eight months into the pandemic.
She says protecting nursing homes should be the number one priorty as cases spike.?we know how deadly obviously covid-19 can be and elderly are just at high risk?
However, greenberg says resolving these outbreaks starts with making sure staff members are on the same page.
We need to hold people accountable, make them feel comfortable talking about their lives and their fears?
I reached out to curry manor and umpqua valley nusing and rehibiltation for comment, but they did not get back to me.
