Core allocation increased despite including water, sanitation in Health Budget: FM
While replying to the Budget discussion in the lower house of the Parliament, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 13 said that despite bringing water and sanitation in the Health Budget, the allocations to the core health sector has not come down.
"In the Budget speech, I very clearly said, we're taking a holistic approach to health.
It is addressing preventive health, it is addressing curative health, it is also addressing well-being.
Otherwise, you are not going to get holistic health-related governance.
I will firmly establish that in spite of bringing water and sanitation, the allocations to the core health has not come down.
On the contrary, it has gone up," said Finance Minister in Lok Sabha.
In a charged Lok Sabha session, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi took centre stage, unveiling a poster of the traditional Halwa ceremony conducted at the Ministry of Finance before the Budget session. Pointing to the poster, Gandhi passionately criticised the lack of diversity, saying, "In this photo, 'Budget ka halwa' is being distributed. I can't see one OBC, tribal, or Dalit officer. The country's halwa is being shared, and 73% of the population is missing. Just 20 officers prepared the Budget of India. Hindustan ka halwa 20 logon ne baatne ka kaam kiya hai."
His remarks underscored the exclusion of marginalised communities in the budget preparation process, sparking a heated debate on representation and inclusivity within the government's financial planning. Gandhi's powerful critique aimed to highlight the disparity and call for more inclusive participation in shaping the nation's economic policies.
