Watch: Women commando force becomes part of Uttarakhand police
A women commando force became part of the Uttarakhand police on February 24.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat inaugurated the Women's Commando Force and Smart Cheetah Police of Uttarakhand.
The chief minister honoured Commando Instructor Shifu Shaurya Bhardwaj, Military Officer Rubina Korky, PTC Narendra Nagar Instructor Hitesh Kumar, Commando Inspector Neeraj Kumar for imparting training to the women commandos.
The 22 women commandos trained in the Police Line in Dehradun displayed a slew of stunts during the occasion.
Uttarakhand has become the fourth state in the country where a squad of women commandos has been added in the police department.
Ten of the total 14 districts in Kerala are among the 30 most landslide-prone districts in the country, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) noted in its 2023 report, raising​ alarm over the increasing vulnerability of the Western Ghats. But it ​has not slowed down the pace of development in the sensitive region, setting it up for one disaster after another, experts say. The risk assessment led by the Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Centre ranked Thrissur third among the most vulnerable districts after Rudraprayag and Tehri Garhwal in Uttarakhand.

The Supreme Court on July 22 stayed the order passed by Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand police asking eatery owners along the Kanwar Yatra path to display names of owners and the staff employed by them. The directives issued by the Uttar Pradesh government are discriminatory, the top court said. The court was hearing a plea by an NGO that challenged the orders issued by the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand government. The order directed shop owners and eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners.

In a tragic incident in Kedarnath, Uttarakhand, a landslide triggered by heavy rains has resulted in the deaths of at least three people, including two tourists from Maharashtra. On the occasion of Independence day, we visited the renowned cellular jail in Dehradun and that ward where the first PM of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was jailed many times. It is also known as Nehru Heritage Centre. Pandit Nehru was sent to this jail for the first time in the year 1932 during the British rule. After which he was imprisoned here in 1934, 1935 and 1941 also.
