House cancels session after police warn of Capitol plot
The U.S. House of Representatives canceled its planned Thursday session, after the Capitol Police warned on Wednesday that a militia group could be plotting to breach the building that was subjected to a deadly attack on Jan.

The latest warning comes amid heightened security at the Capitol building, spurred by January's deadly attack there by supporters of former President Donald Trump.
The House had scheduled for Thursday to debate and vote on a police reform bill, but a Democratic aide said plans changed after intelligence that "an identified militia group" could present a security threat.
Some right-wing conspiracy theorists have falsely claimed that Trump, who lost the election to President Joe Biden, should be sworn in for a second term on Thursday on a day some have described as quote "true Inauguration Day." Before 1937, some U.S. Presidents had been inaugurated on March 4, but ever since, the official day has remained Jan.

Earlier this week, a House official notified lawmakers of a possible security threat spanning Thursday through Saturday.
The Justice Department has so far charged over 300 people who took part in January's siege of the Capitol, including members of right-wing extremist groups the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys.
In a statement, it said the United States Capitol Police Department is quote "aware of and prepared for any potential threats," and working with local, state and federal agencies to prevent them.
Meanwhile, the Senate will convene as planned on Thursday to debate Biden's $1.9 trillion economic relief bill.

Supreme Court Rules That , Some Jan. 6 Defendants, Were Improperly Charged.
NPR reports that the United States Supreme Court voted to limit which defendants accused of taking part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot can be charged by federal prosecutors.
The decision also casts doubt on two out of
the four felony counts in former President
Donald Trump's election subversion indictment.
According to conservative Chief Justice John Roberts,
the court ruled that the U.S. government must prove , “that the defendant impaired the availability or integrity
for use in an official proceeding of records, documents,
objects, or other things used in an official proceeding.”.
NPR reports that prosecutors relied
on a key criminal statute to prosecute
over 350 participants of the Capitol riot.
The statute makes it a crime to alter or
destroy official documents, or to otherwise
obstruct or impede official proceedings.
Roberts wrote that the statute was
not meant to broaden the meaning of
the law to make it a catchall provision. .
The decision will impact other cases related
to Jan. 6, many of which will have to be
resentenced, retried or defendants will be released. .
NYU law professor Ryan Goodman authored
a study that found only 346 of the 1,417 people
charged in connection with the Capitol riot
were charged under the obstruction statute.
The study also found that 71 people are still
awaiting trial on the obstruction charge, but over
half of them are also charged with another felony.
NPR points out that if found guilty of other felony charges,
the sentencing judge is still allowed to use the charge of
obstruction to determine the length of their sentence.

protect its investigations, and the

Garland is now the third U.S. attorney
general in American history to be held in contempt of Congress, BBC reports. .
In an opinion piece published in the 'Washington Post' on June 11, Garland said that "the Justice Department is under attack like never before.".
He pointed to a rise in "conspiracy theories, falsehoods, violence and threats of violence towards department officials by Republican critics.".
