Sri Lankan govt releases 14 fishermen days after arrest
A total of 14 fishermen were released by Sri Lankan government, two days after being arrested.
The fishermen were fishing in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, when Sri Lankan Coast Guard on patrol arrested them for allegedly fishing across the border.
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's request, wherein he urged the government to release them within 24 hours, Sri Lankan government released them.
As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu takes the stand in his high-profile corruption trial, protests are breaking out outside the Tel Aviv-Jaffa District Court. Activists demand a hostage release agreement and call for an end to the ongoing war, accusing Netanyahu of political maneuvering and using the conflict to further the agenda of his ultranationalist allies. This unprecedented moment marks the first time a sitting Israeli prime minister will testify in a criminal trial. The world watches as this dramatic chapter unfolds.

A Russian cargo vessel, the Ursa Major, exploded and sank in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain on December 23, after a catastrophic explosion in its engine room. The explosion caused the ship to list severely before it capsized. The ship, traveling between St. Petersburg and Vladivostok, was carrying cargo, initially believed to be port cranes and hatch covers for icebreakers, intended for Russia's Far East.
The Spanish coast guard successfully rescued 14 of the 16 crew members onboard, while two crew members remain missing. Fishing vessels and rescue teams quickly responded to the distress call, aiding in the efforts to save the survivors. Video footage from the scene shows the Ursa Major listing heavily to the left before sinking completely. The ship, which was built in 2009, had undergone scheduled maintenance earlier in 2024. The operator, SK-Yug, has not yet commented publicly on the incident.
