Supreme Court to hear major gun rights case

The U.S. Supreme Court took up an appeal by two gun owners and the National Rifle Association, an influential gun rights group closely aligned with Republicans, to New York state's restrictions on people carrying concealed handguns outside the home in a case that could further undermine firearms control efforts nationally.

This report produced by Chris Dignam with analysis from Reuters SCOTUS Correspondent Andrew Chung.

The U.S. Supreme Court stepped back into the heated debate over gun rights on Monday, agreeing to hear a challenge backed by the National Rifle Association to New York state's restrictions on people carrying concealed handguns in public.

Lower courts rejected the argument made by two gun owners and the NRA's New York affiliate that the restrictions violated the Constitution's Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. The Supreme Court will hear the appeal next term, which begins in October.

The case could lead to the most consequential ruling on the scope of the Second Amendment in more than a decade.

Reuters Correspondent Andrew Chung covers the Supreme Court.

CHUNG: "This case is very significant because it's a major gun rights case.

And, since the court issued its last landmark rulings on gun rights more than a decade ago, the court has shifted in membership.

It now has a 6-3 conservative majority and they are seen as having a sympathetic view toward an expanded level of gun rights.

Gun control advocates are worried about this case.

They see that in states and municipalities around the country, they see that gun control laws have been put in place, and they see this conservative majority as putting those regulations and those laws at risk." The debate over gun control in the United States has intensified after a series of recent mass shootings.

PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: "It's a national embarrassment." A day after the April 15 mass shooting in Indianapolis, where a gunman killed eight employees at a FedEx facility and then himself, President Joe Biden called on Congress to enact stronger gun control measures.

Major policy changes would require congressional passage, and Senate Republicans stand in the way of Democratic-backed gun control measures already passed in the House of Representatives.

Big Blow To Netanyahu From Israelis: Angry Hostages Families File 112 Cases Against Israeli PM

In a dramatic move, 112 Israelis, including families of hostages held in Gaza, have filed a lawsuit against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government for failing to prioritize the safe return of captives. The plaintiffs accuse the government of violating fundamental laws and neglecting their rights, expressing frustration over 15 months of inaction. Families, represented by Attorney Professor Barak Medina, claim the government's unilateral decisions, without consulting security officials, have contributed to the prolonged suffering. As families demand answers, Netanyahu’s office disputes reports of a potential exchange deal with Hamas. The case, now in Israel’s Supreme Court, is expected to put immense pressure on the government to act. #IsraelLawsuit #NetanyahuUnderFire #HostagesFamilies #GazaCaptives #IsraeliJustice #FamilyRights #SupremeCourtIsrael #NetanyahuAccountability #HostagesRights #IsraelGovernmentFail #HamasExchangeDeal #PressureOnNetanyahu #IsraeliFamiliesFight #CaptivesReturn #LegalBattleIsrael Also Read Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Confirms Troop Presence in Syrian Buffer Zone for Security Reasons :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/israel-occupation-buffer-zone-syria-security-011-4018801.html?ref=DMDesc Israel Intensifies Strikes in Lebanon as Netanyahu Promises Strong Response to Hezbollah Violations :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/deadly-strikes-israel-lebanon-netanyahu-iron-fist-011-4005657.html?ref=DMDesc Netanyahu Endorses Proposed Ceasefire Agreement with Hezbollah Amid Ongoing Gaza Conflict :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/netanyahu-supports-ceasefire-agreement-lebanon-hezbollah-011-3999341.html?ref=DMDesc ~HT.178~PR.152~GR.124~

Trump Echoes Putin's Propaganda, Shifts Blame For Ukraine Invasion Onto NATO and Biden

Donald Trump has sharply criticized President Joe Biden for mishandling tensions between Russia, Ukraine, and NATO, accusing the U.S. leader of sparking the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump argued that Biden's push for Ukraine to join NATO, despite Russia's long standing opposition, was a key trigger for the conflict. He claimed that Washington violated a prior understanding with Russia regarding NATO's expansion limits, setting the stage for what he described as a "disaster" that could have been avoided. Trump further warned that the conflict could escalate and worsen, and expressed regret that preventing the war in 2022 would have been easier than resolving it now. He also reiterated his belief that he could broker a resolution, albeit acknowledging the complexity of the situation. #TrumpBidenUkraineWar #NATOExpansionDisaster #BidenMistakes #UkraineCrisis #TrumpOnBiden #TrumpCriticizesBiden #USRussiaTensions #NATOSparkedWar #TrumpUkraineComments #BidenFailedNegotiations #RussiaUkraineConflict #TrumpOnWar #UkraineNATOControversy #NATOExpansionCriticism #TrumpUkraineResolution Also Read Trudeau Rejects Trump’s Annexation Threat; Poilievre Vows To Strengthen Canada :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/trudeau-rejects-trump-s-annexation-threat-poilievre-vows-to-strengthen-canada-4036629.html?ref=DMDesc Trump Threatens 'All Hell' If Hamas Hostages Aren't Released By Inauguration :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/trump-threatens-all-hell-if-hamas-hostages-arent-released-by-inauguration-4036605.html?ref=DMDesc Trump Threatens To Use Economic Pressure To Make Canada The 51st State :: https://www.oneindia.com/international/trump-threatens-to-use-economic-pressure-to-make-canada-the-51st-state-4036559.html?ref=DMDesc
