Russia again backs India for permanent UNSC membership | Oneindia News *International
Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has backed India’s entry into the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as a permanent member, ahead of special events in the UNSC hosted by India on counter-terrorism and reformed multilateralism this week.
Previously Lavrov while addressing the 77th United Nations General Assembly in September this year said that the Security Council will be more democratic if countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America are included.
As tensions escalate in Ukraine, the UK and France have unveiled a bold plan to deploy up to 30,000 peacekeepers in the war-torn country, contingent on a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine. The proposed peacekeeping force would primarily consist of British and French troops, tasked with safeguarding key infrastructure and monitoring ceasefire compliance using drones and satellite surveillance. However, the plan hinges on securing crucial support from U.S. President Donald Trump, whose backing is seen as essential for the mission's success. While the U.S. has ruled out sending troops, European officials have emphasized that without Trump's approval, the peacekeeper deployment faces significant challenges. Russian officials, led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have vehemently opposed any foreign military presence in Ukraine, warning that it would be viewed as a legitimate target.
