Congress Avoids Partial Government Shutdown

Congress Avoids , Partial Government Shutdown.

NPR reports that the Senate approved a stopgap spending measure by a vote of 71-19 on Dec.

15.

.

The measure gives Congress a week to compile a larger spending package and averts a partial government shutdown.

The House passed the bill on Dec.

14, so now it goes to President Biden.

Republican and Democratic lawmakers will continue to negotiate for what they want included in an omnibus package that details the country's spending through September 2023.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he hopes both sides of the aisle can come to an agreement so funds can be directed to the military, Ukraine aid and other domestic concerns.

NPR reports that while details haven't been revealed, there appears to be "bipartisan agreement on a framework.".

However, the measure is receiving pushback from some lawmakers, such as House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy.

They want to raise the spending, bring more inflation, create more 'wokeism' in the legislation they want to pass through it and not even give members an opportunity to read it or see it, Kevin McCarthy, House GOP leader, via statement.

President Biden's budget proposal for the year called for $5.8 trillion with $1.6 trillion in discretionary spending

Hamas Mocks ‘Delusional’ Netanyahu As Israel PM Defends ‘War With Iran,’ Urges Arms At U.S Congress

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has dismissed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vision for a “future” Gaza Strip, excluding the resistance group from governance, as mere “delusions.” The remarks came in a statement from Hamas on Wednesday, following Netanyahu's speech to the US Congress. In his address, Netanyahu outlined a self-proclaimed vision for Gaza, claiming the Israeli regime aimed to “eliminate” Hamas through an ongoing military campaign. This conflict, which began on October 7, has resulted in the deaths of at least 39,670 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, without achieving the stated goal of defeating the resistance. #Hamas #Netanyahu #HamasSlamsNetanyahu #NetanyahuUSCongress #IsraelPM #DelusionalNetanyahu #WarWithIran #USCongress #ArmsForIsrael #MiddleEastConflict #HamasResponse #NetanyahuSpeech #IsraeliPolitics #GazaConflict #IranTensions #CongressAddress #PoliticalDrama

Supreme Court Rules That Some Jan. 6 Defendants Were Improperly Charged

Supreme Court Rules That , Some Jan. 6 Defendants, Were Improperly Charged. NPR reports that the United States Supreme Court voted to limit which defendants accused of taking part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot can be charged by federal prosecutors. The decision also casts doubt on two out of the four felony counts in former President Donald Trump's election subversion indictment. According to conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, the court ruled that the U.S. government must prove , “that the defendant impaired the availability or integrity for use in an official proceeding of records, documents, objects, or other things used in an official proceeding.”. NPR reports that prosecutors relied on a key criminal statute to prosecute over 350 participants of the Capitol riot. The statute makes it a crime to alter or destroy official documents, or to otherwise obstruct or impede official proceedings. Roberts wrote that the statute was not meant to broaden the meaning of the law to make it a catchall provision. . The decision will impact other cases related to Jan. 6, many of which will have to be resentenced, retried or defendants will be released. . NYU law professor Ryan Goodman authored a study that found only 346 of the 1,417 people charged in connection with the Capitol riot were charged under the obstruction statute. The study also found that 71 people are still awaiting trial on the obstruction charge, but over half of them are also charged with another felony. NPR points out that if found guilty of other felony charges, the sentencing judge is still allowed to use the charge of obstruction to determine the length of their sentence.
