CNN reports that the announcement comes as the latest step in a brutal clampdown on the rights of women in Afghanistan.

The news was reportedly confirmed to CNN by a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Higher Education.

According to a letter by the education ministry, the order will go into effect immediately.

In March, girls were prohibited from returning to secondary schools following months of closure imposed following the Taliban's takeover in August of 2021.

Following the announcement, Human Rights Watch called the most recent bans a , “shameful decision that violates the right to education for women and girls in Afghanistan.”.

The Taliban are making it clear every day that they don’t respect the fundamental rights of Afghans, especially women, Human Rights Watch, via CNN.

According to State Department spokesperson Ned Price, the Taliban's decision will , “have significant consequences for the Taliban and will further alienate the Taliban from the international community and deny them the legitimacy they desire.”.

Following the takeover of the country, the Taliban have tried to promote a more moderate image to garner international support.

However, CNN reports that women in Afghanistan are no longer allowed to work in most sectors, are required to travel with a male guardian and cover their faces in public.
