German Chancellor Olaf Scholz today arrived in New Delhi for a visit to India from February 25-26.
Scholz is accompanied by senior officials and a high-powered business delegation, and his visit to India is the first standalone one by any German Chancellor since the commencement of the Inter-Governmental Consultation (IGC) mechanism between the two nations in 2011, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a press release.
Friedrich Merz is set to become Germany’s new chancellor after his CDU/CSU bloc secured 28.5% votes, defeating Olaf Scholz’s SPD. Merz, a longtime conservative leader, vows to revive Germany’s economy and impose stricter immigration policies. His political career saw setbacks under Angela Merkel, but he staged a strong comeback in 2022. With AfD securing 20.7% votes, coalition talks are crucial. Born in 1955, Merz has a legal background and extensive experience in finance. His next challenge? Forming a stable government to lead Germany through economic and political challenges.
