Powassan Virus: What is this rare and deadly virus that has alarmed US authorities? | Oneindia News
An extremely rare virus has reared its head fuelling concerns.
The US health officials have started warning people about a rare virus called 'Powassan virus' following the death of a resident in Sagadahoc County, Maine.
The recent fatality marks the third case in Maine since 2015 due to this non-treatable illness.
Since 2015, Maine has recorded a total of 15 confirmed cases of Powassan virus infection.
However, the situation became more alarming in 2022 when four cases were reported, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives.
Experts warn that the Powassan virus, often called a ticking time bomb, may become more prevalent with the changing climate.
Humans are primarily exposed to the Powassan virus through bites from infected deer ticks, squirrel ticks, and even groundhog ticks.
The majorly affected regions include North America’s Great Lakes, especially between the late spring and mid-autumn season.
